Frequently Asked Questions

Dragons (ages 6-7) train Monday and Wednesday from 4:30-5:00 PM. Juniors (ages 8-12) train Monday and Wednesday from 5:10-5:55 PM. Teens & Adults (ages 13+) train Tuesday and Thursday from 6:15-7:00 PM.

We offer a complimentary two-week trial membership that includes four classes. Those classes don't have to be consecutive, though we prefer it. The trial is no obligation — if we aren't the right school for you, we don't want your money.

Yes — we strongly encourage parents to stay and watch their child's class so they can reinforce the life skills we teach at home.

Please wear a t-shirt and athletic pants (we recommend avoiding shorts), and keep hair pulled back. Please don't wear jewelry other than a wedding band, and plan to arrive 5-10 minutes early so we can finish a trial enrollment form and help you prepare for class.

Yes — our classes are based on age ranges to accommodate the different learning styles and emotional maturity levels of each group. We usually keep students in the correct class for their age, but we can occasionally accommodate siblings from different age groups in one class, or place a student outside their age range due to size or skill level.

New students do not spar — ever. During the six-month Basic Program, students learn correct technique, body awareness, and control so they can safely spar with partners once they reach the Advanced Program.

Rank tests are held approximately every ten weeks. Students are judged on their attitude and effort in class, the quality of their techniques and self defense skills, successful age-based board breaking, and completion of at least 30 minutes of community service. We use a system of ten color belt ranks from white to recommended black belt (Dragons advance by half-ranks at each test), and students can later earn up to nine degrees of black belt.

Our Basic Program requires a six-month commitment. Our Advanced and Leadership Programs require a 12-24 month commitment.

We place students in the class where they'll best fit with their peers based on age, size, rank, and skill level. All students ages 6-7 start in the Dragons class, and most older students start in the class for their listed age group. When they're ready, Dragons and Juniors move up into our Juniors Advanced classes and/or the Teens & Adults class. Teens and Adults stay in their own class until they reach black belt.

We run five class cycles each year, starting in January, March, June, August, and October, and we recommend joining as close to the start of a cycle as possible — after the midpoint of a cycle, new students are asked to wait for the next one. Because of high demand and strong student retention, there's sometimes a waiting list for a specific class. We appreciate your patience — it's part of how we keep class sizes right for quality instruction.
